Anorexia nervosa (AN) is thought to reflect dysregulation of motivational systems contributing to maladaptive behavior such as dietary restriction. While altered reward processing in AN is well-established, it is unknown whether this reflects a general or disorder-specific hedonic reward surfeit and/or altered incentive salience (wanting), or how this relates to appetitive vs aversive outcomes, which could impact problematic approach-avoidance behavior.
